Poster and Magazine Images

After finding faults with my previously intended magazine image of John and Frances, I decided to take one of Sarah to link to the modern aspects of the film and to potentially attract a wider audience.
Here is the image I took:
And here is the edited version:
For my poster, I used this image:
And also edited it, before adding text etc:

I used Photoshop to edit the images, which I initially found difficult in comparison to my peers, as at AS I had produced a film opening rather than a music magazine, so therefore I had little to no experience of using Photoshop.
My teacher was aware that I had no experience with Photoshop so aided my learning of how to use it by giving me a help guide called 'The idiot's guide to Photoshop', which consisted of simplistic instructions and diagrams to help me.
The overall experience was an interesting learning curve and I feel more confident with using Photoshop and similar image editing software.

Film magazine problems

After experiencing problems trying to correct the picture (Above) and increase the quality, I have decided to instead take a different photo, this time of Sarah (the modern girl) holding the letter which reveals what happened in the past and in turn allows her to reflect on what happened, or, have her face at the image, looked shocked with perhaps the letter reflected in her eyes. I will attempt to re-create this --->

Soundtrack

We have researched music for the soundtrack and have decided to try and re create something that sounds similar to Gymnopedie's 1,2 and 3 by Erik Satie as they are simple yet emotional piano pieces.

Film name

We have decided to change the film name to 'The Letters'.
I had a survey but unfortunately some of the people I asked to respond wrote inappropriate comments and I am unable to display the results of the survey here.
The name 'The Letters' was the most popular and '1877' came second.

New storyline

We have edited the storyline: A girl in the 21st century decides to research her ancestors, and finds out about the life of her great great grandmother, who lived in a stately home and was a woman of nobility (close-up of ancestry website) She reads a newspaper cutting with a headline explaining that a Lord has been killed in an "accidental fire" which also damaged the stately home where he was staying (her great great grandmother's house) She then reads a contemporary newspaper cutting, with a headline explaining that the house has been restored to its original state with government funds She goes to the house and finds letters that were previously undiscovered, and are between her great great grandmother and two different men, one a poor butler and one a Lord (who was killed in the Through these letters she discovers the dark romance she had with each of these men, which resulted in a turbulent love triangle between the three of them, born of jealous and bitterness. Such a thing would be scandalous beyond belief in the 19th century. She also discovers a dark secret that her great great grandmother kept to the grave: the jealousy and confrontation between the men, as well as their attempts to hide their own secret love, cause the butler to burn down the lady of nobility's stately home, in which the rich man is residing; this has always been believed to be an accident until the discovery of the letters. The lady of nobility is however, manages to escape the fire, and runs away with the butler, throwing away her title and creating an uproar of scandal. The 21st century girl is shocked and upset to discover these dark family secrets, and the fact that her great great grandfather is a murderer.

Film poster and magazine pictures.

For my ancillary tasks, I have decided on making a film poster and the cover of a film magazine.
I have been researching the conventions of posters and magazines and decided out of the pictures I took on the days we filmed, to use this picture for my poster:

And this picture for my magazine cover:

Although the pictures are slightly pixelated,I intend to use a sepia effect for the poster picture to make it look like an old photograph and for the magazine picture I intend to try and clean up.

Filming

On Tuesday 25th and Thursday 27th we filmed our coursework. On Tuesday we filmed at Aske Hall. Though the weather was slightly overcast, it didn't rain and was light enough for us to film properly outside.
On Thursday, though it rained this was fine as we filmed everything inside
at Kiplin Hall.
Because we needed to film one scene at night, we filmed it after college, about 5:30pm on Tuesday 8th November. This also went well, we had no problems with lighting due to street lamps. However, we have decided against using this footage.

Hair and makeup photo's

I was in charge of hair whilst Emily did makeup.
I brushed Jon's hair (playing the role of the rich man) so that it was smooth. With Frances' hair, I tied it into a plaited bun with strands at either side of her face. I added ribbons and/or flowers for the everyday scenes and feathers and a jeweled hairband for the ballroom scene. I was very pleased with the overall effect, I felt it looked authentic despite Frances not having ringlets as was fashionable at the time.

We will be filiming outside and in the chapel at Aske Hall and then everything else at Kiplin Hall in Scorton.

Victorian Hair styles research

Websites used for research:
http://kerryg.hubpages.com/hub/A-Simple-Victorian-Hairstyle
http://www.erasofelegance.com/fashion/hairstyles.html
http://www.ehow.com/info_8157131_do-do-victorian-hairstyles.html
http://www.ehow.com/info_8257191_victorian-mens-hairstyles.html
From this research I decided to practise some hairstyles out on myself. As I have naturally curly hair I was able recreate them easily, however Frances has naturally straight hair, so attempting to curl her hair would be difficult.
The first image is an elaborate style with a diamond hair piece, which I will probably use on the days of filming, alongside ribbons, flowers and feathers. The second image is of a much simpler style which I will use as well.

Further changes

After changing our storyboard so that our film is about someone reflecting on the past, we have decided not to use an elderly lady looking at a diary, we have decided to have instead a teenage girl going to her great-great grandmother's stately home and finding a letter and thus reflecting on the events surrounding the letter.
The actor playing the modern girl is Sarah Brewitt, an a-level drama student.

Location problem

Our preferred location- Treasurer's House has eailed us to tell us that we are not allowed to film due to the site being so busy due to the house being a tourist attraction.
So, to broaden our chances of getting a location in time, we have also decided to email Aske Hall (Near Richmond) for the opportunity to use their property as a location.

Friday, 7 October 2011

4 most likely locations

• Beningbrough Hall and Gardens (York)
• Castle Howard (York)
• Treasurer’s House (York)
• Nunnington Hall (Nunnington near York)
We have emailed all 4 asking for permission to film there just in case any one says no.We are adamant on filming particularly at Treasurer's House

because we feel that it looks the most authentic and has lots of props and things already there.

Changes

Due to some difficulties in composing a believable storyline, we have had to make some changes to the story and add some new scenes.
We have decided to show a very old woman in an attic who finds a diary. The camera shows a close up of the date '5th May 1877' then our origninal scenes are shown.

New begining to story:

Our actors

We held auditions to help us decide who we would choose as our actors. They had a synopsis of the story and were given a script plus the opportunity to improvise.
However, though we filmed this, when we gave the tape to the I.T technicians at our college they misplaced it.
Fortunately, I filmed a video of Emily and Charlotte giving our responses to the auditions and who we had picked:

http://youtu.be/FS4gLoQhqnE

And this is the auditions script we used, which was deliberately vague so the actors were forced to improvise so we could see how they could respond:
Script
Females:
You are a rich girl who lives in the 1800’s, and you are in your late teens.
1: Imagine you are spying on someone through a keyhole and you see something shocking.
2: Imagine you are being watched by a judgemental group of people and you have to pretend to be upset about something.
3: Improvisation

Males:
You are a man in his early twenties and you live in the 1800’s.
1: Pretend you are getting drunk in an alley. You drop the bottle and it smashes.
2: Imagine that you are flirting with someone, but in a subtle way.
3: Improvisation

Inspiration

The idea for our trailer; for the synopsis of the film, came from reading books and watching the films for  Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Emma.

<iframe width="560" height="345" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cTZAzVzFShw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

We are aiming to achieve an film trailer that is similar to The Woman in Black (2011) trailers in terms of editing and costume

And similar to the costume and story style of The Piano trailer (1993)

Friday, 9 September 2011

Scenes in the trailer

•Confrontation scene – over-the-shoulder close-up of poor man, which then tracks as a high-angle long or mid-shot before closing in on a low-angle close-up of rich man

•Party scene – long-shot

Introduction

For my A2 media coursework task, I will be working in a group of 3 to create a film trailer and for my individual ancillary tasks, I will be designing a film poster and a film magazine cover.
Because I made a film opening last year, I am already sufficiently skilled with using camera equipment and editing and sound software.

Target audience

The audience we have intended to target and have created our trailer to attract are females, late teens to middle 40's, with an interest in period dramas.
We decided that perhaps late teens might watch the film because of the modern aspects of Sarah being a college student  who investigates her ancestors.
We thought that because it is the closest to our storyline, we would target a similar audience to that of the T.V programme, 'Lost in Austen' from 2008. The programme is about a early 20's girl from the present day who is  infatuated with the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. She finds herself switching places with the novel's heroine and entering the world of the novel. Because of it's modern and period aspects that are intertwined, which is very similar to our story, we decided to have a similar audience because of that.
